Grouper app for iPhone and iPad
This is a group allocation program that appropriately and fairly puts participants into groups or teams within many subjects or areas, such that participants minimally appear with the same people in the different subjects.
This sort of participant allocation process often take place in educational institutions, and they often get it wrong, by allocating the same students with each other over and over. This can lead to handicapping those groups with unfair allocations. Of course if you want to put certain people together, then with Grouper you can, for example you might want to keep women together in a large predominantly male enrolment. On the other hand you might want to split groups up who speak the same language, or have the same hobby or whatever.
Another useful way to use it would be to allocate teams in sports, so that experts (or novices) are on different teams.
- Hows it do it? -
In the simplest case Grouper tries to allocate participants who have been together before in the same time period, to different groups within a class or team, but you can influence the allocation by setting up categories, so that participants are either more likely to be together or less likely.
- What its not! -
It is not a class room admin program, it does not do other resource allocations (such as teachers, coaches etc). It is not a round robin organiser.
It is not magical, you can always manually shift participants around if the algorithm does not quite give you want you want.
- How to use -
- Create a time period - e.g. "semester one"
- add manually or import a list of subjects
- choose how many groups per subject
- add manually or import a list of participants
- Tap Enrol participants into a subject & create groups
- Tap "Autofill Groups" to allocate all the enrolled participants into their groups.
- (optional) Export your group listings.
Or, if all participants are in all subjects, and all subjects have the same number of groups, then use the Wizard.
